Christmas is a time of year that most of us will be lucky enough to spend within the company of loved ones with a lovely Christmas dinner and a shelter above our heads. This Christmas however, is going to be a completely different experience for so many people in Birmingham.
Since the start of the pandemic in March, homelessness across our city has drastically increased with capacity, resources, and supplies at support centres across Birmingham being pushed to the absolute limits.
In previous years, we have provided support through collaboration with our Digbeth neighbours to host a drop-in event for Sifa Fireside at the Old Library; providing free Christmas meals, care packages, hair-cuts, and a warm place to stay for homeless members of our community.
Regrettably, with new covid restrictions, and many of our independent businesses closing down or struggling to make ends meet themselves, we are unable to deliver this event this year. We are instead launching a new fundraising project, ‘Second City Christmas’ along with other businesses in Birmingham, with the aim of providing SIFA Fireside vital funds to keep the centre running throughout these difficult winter months.
A rundown of how your donation can help the centre this Christmas are as follows:
- £10 would keep the centre heated for a day
- £20 would allow for hot showers to run for a week
- £40 would pay for the kitchen to serve breakfast and lunch to all of its users for a day
- £50 would pay for the phone bill to cover essential safe and well checks
We know that our city is full of amazing people and that when times get tough, we pull together to help out those that are struggling. It would mean so much if you could make a donation if you are able to. Something small can go such a long way!
